How we fight VEDS.
Four programs, each built to tackle a different piece of the VEDS puzzle — from the ambulance to the research lab.
◆ Overview ◆
Four programs. One mission.
Chalkbird focuses its resources where they can do the most good — where a single conversation, a single training, a single dollar can translate into a life protected. Our programs are built to address VEDS from every angle: the emergency response, the community around the patient, the family navigating the diagnosis, and the research that will ultimately change the disease.
We believe in being honest about where we are. Some of our programs are already active. Some are launching soon. And some are still in the planning stage — but we include them here because transparency matters, and so does showing you the full picture of where Chalkbird is going.

◆ Program 01
First Responder Education.
Equipping EMS and fire department personnel with the knowledge they need to recognize VEDS and respond appropriately — because in a vascular emergency, minutes matter.
When a VEDS patient experiences a vascular emergency, standard emergency protocols can be harmful. Blood thinners, aggressive fluid resuscitation, and routing to the wrong facility can all make a bad situation worse. The problem isn't bad training — it's that VEDS awareness isn't part of the training. We're changing that.

◆ Why It Matters
One trained responder who recognizes the signs of VEDS could be the difference between a patient going home and a patient being lost.
◆ Program 02
Family Support.

Building a support network for families newly navigating a VEDS diagnosis — because no family should face this alone.
When Dan received his diagnosis, it came without warmth, without a roadmap, and without anyone to call. We believe every family navigating VEDS deserves better — and we're building the support structure we wish we'd had. This program is in planning now, with the goal of launching as our capacity grows.
✓
Peer connection with other families who have walked the path before.
✓
Resource navigation to help families find specialists, genetic counselors, and insurance guidance.
✓
Digital awareness campaigns that explain what matters most in the first weeks and months.
✓
In-person training sessions where families can connect, share, and support each other.
◆ Why It Matters
A diagnosis changes a life. The difference between facing it alone and facing it with community changes everything about what comes next.
◆ Program 03
Research Funding.
Directing every dollar we can toward the research that will ultimately change the course of VEDS — for families, for patients, for future generations.
Awareness and education save lives today. Research changes what tomorrow looks like. VEDS needs better diagnostics, better treatments, better emergency protocols, and better long-term care models — and none of that happens without funding. Chalkbird is committed to putting as much as we can into the work that moves the science forward.
✓
Direct research contributions to established VEDS and HDCT research programs.
✓
Partnerships with academic institutions and VEDS-focused medical research efforts.
✓
Transparent allocation — we report how and where the money goes.
✓
Focus on real-world outcomes — research that translates into better care, not just more papers.
◆ Why It Matters
The ancestors my family lost didn't have the research we have access to today. The research we fund now changes what's possible for the generations that come next.
